What you feed your rats plays a fundamental role in their longterm health and longevity. A proper and well balanced diet is crucial in maintaining a happy and healthy rattie lifestyle. The basic diet should be some sort of block diet to ensure that your companion rats are getting the vitamins and nutrients they require in every bite. Feeding them the grain/seed mixes permits them to pick and choose what they want to eat and they may not get everything the need to.

The BEST block diets out there are Oxbow Regal Rat and Harlan Teklad. Please read this article to educate yourself about the Harlan Teklad diets in order to select the best formula for your companion rats. The blocks should be fed freely and should be about 80% of their daily diet.

The other 20% of their diet should consist of fresh healthy foods. The "general" rule is that anything you can eat, your rats can eat too. Afterall, they are naturally scavengers and have lived for hundreds of years off our garbage! Below are some resources just in case you would like to double check to make sure what you are giving your rats are good and safe for them.
